Autumn isn’t all about a new coat for the season, it’s also the time to embrace layers from ponchos to faux fur jackets, says Kent Life fashion guru Paula Fry

Paula says …

Layer, layer, layer – it’s doesn’t have to be all about coats

I’m bouncing into the autumn this year gals. My fashion plan for October and November is to keep the heavy coats at wbay for as long as I can. Now I know we talk each year about me excitedly waiting to get my faux fur jackets out of hibernation but this year, I’m all about the layered look without compromising on keeping warm.

Here’s how….

• As the chilly mornings start, the key to keeping warm is to layer up. A few thin layers will keep your warmer than a heavy jacket thrown over a thin tee. Think a white shirt (left out), a cropped jumper, leather jacket and a scarf. If you think you’ll still be cold, add beanie hat and gloves. You can always wear a cami vest under your shirt for extra warmth – and remember, you can strip most of this off once you arrive wherever you are going!

• Faux fur scarves, collars and snoods are a must. Go to Helwen Moore (my personal fave), ASOS, Shrimps, Top Shop and more for a range of styles, colours and price points. Add them over shirts and cropped jumper combos (as above), denim jackets, dresses, cardi-coats, blazers…you get the idea. They keep your neck really warm plus they look great. Once the weather really turns cold, these accessories come into their own when worn with your winter coat.

• Gilets are essential in autumn; they are what autumn was invented for, after all. Too hot for summer and not warm enough for winter, your gilet adds interest to your outfit, gives you the layered look and can be as dressed up or down as you dare. Avoid the waterproof ones, however, unless you want that Barbara Woodhouse look circa 1982…

• This trend has stayed with us for the last few seasons, the sleeveless coat and I’m still in love. The high street has a plethora of styles and colours available but I’d go for a classic camel and wear instead of a trench coat.

Now go forth. Layer and love it!
