The original Volvo XC90’s longevity is an automotive legend and its successor looks set to match and surpass its record

News in brief

MX-5 take four

Mazda’s new MX-5 arrives next year and the Japanese marque has used its advanced engine and weight-saving Skyactiv technologies to return the legendary two-seater to the fun roots of the 1989 original.Retaining a classic and balanced front engine/rear-wheel drive layout, the Mark IV roadster also looks sleeker and lighter than the outgoing version, yet will surely be just as affordable.

TT joins open-top party

Also lighting up next year’s open-top sector will be Audi’s third take on the TT Roadster. Order books are open (prices £31,955-37,555) with launch engines being a 230PS (227bhp) 2.0 turbocharged petrol - front-wheel-drive or quattro - and 184PS (181bhp) 2.0 front-driven diesel. The German premium marque says the car has been lightened dramatically by hybrid aluminium and steel construction.

MINI high fives

Improved rear legroom, a practical third rear seat and 37-litre bigger boot all come as standard on the first ever five-door MINI Hatch, out now. This practicality - expected to drive a further surge in MINI sales - has been made possible by a 72mm wheelbase stretch versus the three-door MINI hatch, yet the newcomer costs just £600 more: prices start at £14,350.
