Radnor Timber have been producing timber framed buildings for twenty years now, but have recently opted to work with regional consultants around the country. Hearts Of Oak is Bridgwater based, operating across Somerset, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Sussex, Kent & Surrey.

Hearts Of Oak are finding that many people are improving their homes and gardens, rather than moving perhaps due to these uncertain times. They have quoted on 39 buildings in the past six weeks ranging from garden pavilions, through garages to entire houses and from private clients to golf clubs.

Offering a totally personal service, the Hearts of Oak team can take you through from initial on-site consultation through planning permission where needed, to final construction and delivery.

Their oak framed buildings are of the highest quality available in terms of size of timber and quality and they ascertain that their buildings improve with age to add value and beauty to your property against some that look decidedly the worse for wear after some years.

( If left in its natural state, with the passage of time, the building will take on a new appearance subtle variations and a mellowing of colour will add warmth and character).

All the oak used in the frames is sourced from sustainably managed woodlands in Europe and the U.K, and is amongst the largest section (7 x 7) used in the industry. Each post or beam is carefully inspected for its suitability for its intended use and is not purchased entirely on price cheaper oak is often available to us but Hearts of Oak insist on using the appropriate grade.

It goes with saying that each building is designed to comply with modern building regulations and is accompanied by a structural engineers report where required. The buildings are designed so that they remain weatherproof and secure. Concealed saw cuts are incorporated within the oak frame to accommodate lead and damp proof membranes where required. Additionally, all the frames are traditionally hand crafted from constructional grade oak in Radnor Timbers workshops in Wales, (not machined overseas as is the case with many timber framed builders).

There are no internal supporting posts in most of the standard buildings so the open plan ground floor remains spacious and unobstructed. By using 175mm x 175mm (7 x 7) posts, eaves beams and tie beams it means that the lofted buildings include 350mm deep tie beams. In most cases the buildings can easily be converted or adapted to suit commercial or residential use. This even applies to lofted buildings which include oversized tie beams to support the first floor structure.

Hearts of Oak double peg our joints with seasoned oak pegs so as to create incredibly strong and stable structures. their standard oak framed buildings are designed to accommodate the largest family vehicles.

The ancillary softwood items (rafters, wall studs, weatherboarding etc.) are Vac Vac clear treated and therefore are delivered in their natural colour (there are no brown or green coloured preservatives as they look somewhat agricultural). When exposed to the elements they will in time turn silvery grey similar to the principal oak frame if left unstained.

All joinery products (doors, windows and staircases etc.) are hand crafted by their own joiners and are extremely heavy duty ( i.e. doors are 55mm thick).

Hearts of Oak supply supply recommended base, brickwork and constructional drawings for clients who wish to use their own builders or for self-build projects.

Hearts of Oak Limited deliver a full turnkey package, to include site visits, planning and design advice, quotations and constructional contract services for all or part of the project. All work is done in house, rather than using sub contractors for different elements. This, they believe, enables them to give a better service, and at the end of the day, a superior product. Finally, for a small fee they can prepare planning drawings for you to use in planning applications or can undertake full planning applications on your behalf .

If a standard model doesnt quite fit the bill, they will design and manufacture a building to suit your specific requirements.

Finally, an event not to be missed is The South Of England Show at Ardingly (7-9 June) where Hearts Of Oak will be displaying one of their Garden Pavilions, so do get along if you can, it will be worth the visit.
