Why not holiday at home beside your own pool this year and enjoy a Kentish ‘staycation?’

A pool for all seasons

It’s a fallacy to think that outdoor pools are only usable in the summer. According to managing director Anthony Exell of XL Pools Ltd: “It is perfectly possible to be swimming on Christmas Day provided you have a slatted, insulated cover and a heat pump that works to maintain a pleasant pool temperature.” Although the pool featured here costs considerably more as a result of special terraced excavations and automatic cover, the company can build a basic 10m x 4m pool from around £35,000. Available from XL Pools Ltd, Pluckley 01233 840336.

American inspiration

Try a ‘cascade’ pool created for a home in Chichester using an American pool system designed for ease of installation, energy efficiency and low maintenance. Cascade pools typically range from around £30,000 to £50,000, depending on factors including size, design, features and specification. Available from award-winning Home Counties Pools, 01403 259755.

Room for improvement

If your pool is looking tired and jaded, then consider a refurbishment. One pool owner wanted new borders, re-tiling, mosaics and pebble inserts between the existing paving stones, plus other works. The facelift cost around £10,000 and was carried out by Petts Wood-based Bespoke Swimming Pools, whose staff are all members of The Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers, 01732 601031.
