Kent teachers and pupils attended ‘An Audience with Peter Snow’ at Canterbury Cathedral Lodge to learn about the 2015 bicentenary commemorations for the Battle of Waterloo, described by the writer, historian and presenter as “one of the most seismic events in world military history.” Other speakers included Major General Sir Evelyn Webb-Carter, Chairman of Waterloo 200, Peter Warwick, Chairman of the New Waterloo Dispatch and Cdr Nicholas Chatwin of the Royal Navy. The audience heard about the New Waterloo Dispatch, a ceremonial interpretation of how the news was delivered 200 years ago, and how they can become involved via visual arts and costume with the help of Radiator Arts and Hungry for History (www.hungryforhistory.info). At least 50 schools are needed to create 200 papier-mâché heads of characters from the Napoleonic Wars and to then take part in a Waterloo Parade on The Mall in London on 21 June. See June Kent Life’s in-depth feature for more on the commemorations of Waterloo 200 and the leading role Broadstairs will be taking.
