The great and the good of Kent gathered to celebrate planning consent for the first phase of the long-awaited Betteshanger regeneration project.

The Viscount De L’Isle MBE, Lord Lieutenant of Kent, performed the ground-breaking ceremony held to celebrate planning consent for the first phase of the long-awaited Betteshanger regeneration project. A year ago plans for the Betteshanger Sustainable Parks scheme were officially launched at the House of Commons. Twelve months on, the first planning consent has been obtained and building is commencing at this former colliery site. Guests were given tours of the site led by Tim Evans, architect,
and presentations were given by Mark Lumsdon-Taylor, Hadlow Group director
of finance and resources, Richard Morsley, director Betteshanger Sustainable Parks and Charlie Elphicke, MP for Dover and Deal. The ceremony was brought to a close by Councillor Paul Watkins, leader
of Dover District Council. The Betteshanger Sustainable Parks Visitor Centre will include a unique Mining Heritage Museum and Heritage Trail and an Energy Centre showcasing green technologies including biomass and photovoltaic cells. The technology will generate sufficient
energy to power the visitor centre with surplus feeding into the national grid. Mark Lumsdon-Taylor
