Brewin Dolphin was founded by stockbroker John Dawes in 1762. Since then, the firm has gone from strength to strength and weathered many economic storms.

Having been appointed executive chairman in 2005, it is fair to say that Jamie Matheson has probably had to contend with more storms than most of his predecessors.

While I suspect every generation has looked at the business while theyve been in it as a time of great change, he says, I would argue strongly that there has been no period of greater change than we are seeing at the moment.

Although Matheson may have a lot to deal with, not least the constant stream of new regulations, he says that the firms raison dtre never falters. The key driver has always been the provision of service to clients and that has never really changed, he says. We have had to adapt our service as both market conditions and regulatory conditions have changed, but were always very focused on doing what the client wants and providing a good service.

The main way in which Brewin Dolphin maintains such a good service is by focusing on the individual needs of its clients.

While other organisations have taken on a more one size fits all policy and closed their regional offices, Brewin Dolphin has expanded around the UK and recently into Ireland. It has also attracted talented investment managers from other firms in order to build the strongest teams possible.

With 250 years of investment experience, it is clear that Brewin Dolphin is at the top of its game, and if anyone thinks that being so well established means that the firm isnt forward-thinking, Matheson has a clear message for them.

If your company is 250 years old, it has proved that it is not old-fashioned, he says. Those that were slow to move with the times fell by the wayside long ago. With a history of change, its no surprise that the firm is continuing to plan for the long term.

Im determined to ensure that Brewin Dolphin can continue to grow and prosper, says Matheson. A lot of the work were doing at the moment, such as changing our systems, is focused on that.

As for how Brewin Dolphins is marking its 250th anniversary, the firm has chosen to set up a charity foundation. Although the plans are still in their infancy, Matheson has high hopes that the foundation will create a legacy of which the firm can be proud. While we celebrate our 250th anniversary, I think its fitting to create a foundation that we hope will still be doing good work in another 250 years, he says.
