For the last seven years The Goods Shed has brought together many passionate food producers, retailers and eccentric craftsmen under one roof in a local food market in Canterbury.
The Goods Shed in Canterbury are a brilliant Farmers Market Shop selling a big range of local produce and Raw Milk.
The Raw Milk is sold via a vending machine allowing customers to bring in their containers and fill up at 70p a pint. As I am sure you are aware raw milk is much better for us that pasteurised and to me, sums up the food industry. Pasteurisation is great for a long supply chain allowing milk to become a commodity by increasing shelf life. No consideration to the farmer or quality of the product!
The FSA rules say that only farmers can sell their own raw milk, meaning the Goods Shed cannot buy in and resell raw milk. They have therefor put the vending machine in the name of the farmer, which the local authority are happy with.
If they can sell enough milk they will keep the machine and the Italian company who supply the vending machines, want to put them in Farm Shops all over the country. Apparently these machines are found throughout Italy and if done here, I think, could save some of the last small dairy farms.
