Joe Grey Stew Recipe

Kent School dinner recipes

This is a traditional Gypsy stew usually made from sausages and bacon but it can be adapted to use up whatever you have in the fridge.

Serves 4


6sausages cut into bite sized pieces

6 rashers of bacon chopped

1.5 lt water

4 large tomatoes quartered

4 large potatoes, peeled and sliced

1onion, peeled & chopped

3stock cubes


1 Fry the sausages, bacon and onion in a pan until well browned.

2 Cover with water, and add the sliced potatoes.

3 Simmer.

4 After about 10 minutes, add the tomatoes and sprinkle the stock cubes all over.

5 Let it simmer for a further 20 minutes.

6 Joe Grey should be served as a runny stew, with crusty bread.
