1. Tell me about yourself

My name is Thomas Hutchings, I’m 16 and I go to Bethany School in Goudhurst. I live in Sevenoaks, and have done all my life. I have two older sisters, both currently at university; my mother, Kate, is a headteacher and my father, John, is a chartered building surveyor.

2. What are you doing now?

I am currently in lower sixth, studying Business studies, Geography, English Literature and P.E.

I am also the managing director of my Young Enterprise company, Vertigo. This is a national scheme, where sixth-form students set up and run their own businesses for a year. We have made Christmas hampers, school production T-shirts, Year11 Leaver’s memorabilia and are currently planning a summer dodge ball tournament.

Being md has been stressful at times, but it’s also been thoroughly enjoyable and a great learning curve. It has also given me the opportunity to enter the Young Enterprise public speaking competition. I recently won the county final, with a talk on climate change. This gave me the opportunity to speak at the Institute of Directors’ Young Entrepreneurs Dinner at Canterbury Cathedral.

I play rugby, football and cricket for my school First Teams, and I am the head monitor of my boarding house and my sports house.

3. What are your ambitions for the future?

I hope to study International Business Studies at university and then go on to work for a large multi-national business, working between the USA and England, and one day own and run my own business.

4. What is the best thing about living in Kent?

I would have to say my friends and my school. At my school I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to undertake all kinds of extra-curricular activities, such as Young Enterprise, team-building courses, and sport. All of these make me a better person. My friends are all a great laugh and we have fun going out and relaxing at the weekend.

5. Where do you go out in your area?

Although I live in Sevenoaks, I spend most of my time in Tonbridge or Tunbridge Wells. I like to go to the cinema or bowling with my friends, or if the weather is good, go and play golf or have a game of football.

6. What was the last book you read?

The last book I read was for my English Literature course, a novel called Spies, set during World War II. The last book that I read for my own enjoyment was Jeremy Clarkson’s book, I know you got Soul, which was extremely funny and I would definitely recommend it.
