Kent CLA dominate NFU at Canterbury

In its centenary year, the Kent branch of the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) challenged the Kent branch of the National Farmers Union (NFU) to a cricket match at the Kent County Cricket Club’s St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury.

After a delayed start and a good lunch, the CLA raced to 198 for four, including a century from Justin Guillen, before rain finally took the upper hand and prevented any further play.

While the landowner/tenant distinction between the CLA and NFU has blurred to an extent over the years, there is still a keen but friendly rivalry between the organisations, and both sides were determined to win, and had fielded strong line-ups.

Chairman of the Kent branch of the CLA, Nick Tapp, who played, said: “It’s a great shame we couldn’t see this one out, particularly as so many people had put a lot of effort into setting up the game – and we were in rather a strong position, too! It was all good-spirited stuff, however. We just hope for better luck with the weather next time.”

At a reception after the game sponsored by Strutt & Parker, a cricket bat was auctioned made from the famous lime which used to stand within the boundary ropes at the St Lawrence ground.
