Full Frontal takes Gold
Hadlow College’s ‘Full Frontal’ garden, designed by college graduates Heidi Harvey and Fern Alder, (see July Kent Life, page 127) was awarded a Gold Medal at this year’s Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.
Described as “possibly the most innovative garden in the show” and “a wakeup call to a disaster in the making”, Full Frontal was inspired by the Royal Horticultural Society campaign to save front gardens.
The BBC featured the garden in two programmes covering Hampton Court and Full Frontal was one of the most photographed gardens at the show. The garden incorporated permeable surfaces that allowed water to percolate through to the water table – and the practical aspect of this feature was well-tested at this year’s show, surely the wettest on record.
Rochester-based Fern is no newcomer to the limelight. In 2004, while still an undergraduate at Hadlow, her garden ‘Looking at the World Through Rose-tinted Spectacles’ won a Silver Medal at Hampton Court.
In 2006, in collaboration with Surrey-based Heidi, she designed Hadlow College’s Silver Medal-winning CaCo3 garden that drew attention to Kent’s disappearing Downlands and the possible regeneration of disused quarries.
