Above: Wisdoms, Chipstead as the village butchers (Kent Life Magazine)

Living in an old butchers might not be to everyone’s taste, but they don’t come any more flash than this.

Wisdoms, on Chipstead High Street, is an attractive Grade II 17th-century village house, half red brick and half tile hung.

It’s been added to over the years, so there’s more room inside than you’d think. With six bedrooms, the single-storey extension has been tiled and gable-ended, and at the rear the elevations are in red and blue brick with classic sash windows, under a beautiful tiled roof.

Once the village butchers, the house still retains many period features

Once the village butchers, the house still retains many period features including Inglenook fireplaces, exposed wall and ceiling timbers and latch doors with wrought-iron handles.

The ex-butcher’s shop, now the reception hall, still has the external shutters which were used to keep the shop cool in the days before refrigeration.

Outside, the cobbled driveway gives way to an iron gate and access to the stunning landscaped gardens and orchard behind the house. Having been divided up into ‘rooms’ of interest, they incorporate three ornamental ponds, a heated swimming pool and an outside dining area, which was once the sausage-making barn.
