Tell us about yourself
My name is Sam Vile, I'm 18 years old and studying at St Edmund’s School, Canterbury. I also live in Canterbury, and play Ultimate Frisbee for Great Britain Juniors (under 19).
The game is played with a 175gm disc and mixes the best features of soccer, basketball, American football and netball. My younger brother Robbie also plays and recently made the GB Junior second team, as well as playing with me in the Kent Open first team and the Kent Junior team, which I captain.
What are you doing now?
This summer I took my A-level exams at St Edmunds, where I also learnt to play Frisbee. Much of my initial success is down to George Monk - my physics teacher at the school - and his encouragement and advice. This year I am going to Vancouver with three other Kent Junior players to play in the Ultimate Frisbee World Championships (WUGC).
What are your ambitions for the future?
I am taking a gap year and hope to go to India. I will be applying to universities with the aim of doing a joint honours degree in psychology and philosophy. I’m hoping this will lead to a job in advertising, and I also aim to carry on playing Frisbee until my body gives up on me.
What's the best thing about living in Kent?
It’s hard to say because I have never lived anywhere else that I can really remember, but I am a fan of the nicer weather that we have here and if it wasn't for the help of Kent Ultimate! - and especially the president, ‘Whippet’ (real name Matthew Ford) - I wouldn't be as good at Frisbee as I am today.
What are you hobbies and interests?
As you may have guessed, I am addicted to Frisbee. I say addicted as it is the only sport that has ever caused me to shout out as I fall asleep, mime throws in lessons and drive the length and breadth of the country for weekend tournaments.
I also love music and all my money is spent either on Frisbee or new music. Robbie and I have such a huge CD collection that it would take months to list, let alone listen to.
What was the last book you read?
The last book I finished was The Naked God by Peter F. Hamilton, the third in a 4,000-page sci-fi saga, and I loved it. I am also in the middle of The Art of Happiness by HH Dalai Lama and Howard C. Cutler, an autobiography of HH Dalai Lama, and a book on ancient philosophy by Anthony John Patrick Kenny.
