1. Vintage treasures and summer-inspired décor

Faced with a gloomy and dated kitchen in her three-bedroom end of terrace house, owner Kirsty Brooker, who runs an online vintage homeware business, knew she could transform the kitchen by making it lighter. ‘The layout worked quite well but it was let down by the detail and colour scheme,’ she says. “I wanted it to be light, fresh and modern with lots of natural light. I wanted space for a big dining table. We also wanted patio doors so we could throw them open in the summer and make the kitchen and garden one big, sociable area. 2. Embrace nature with tropical decoration

Create a laidback atmosphere with a tropical-inspired colour palette and plants. The presence of plants has a calming and positive effect on us, and stress and anxiety levels are reduced. “Plants act as filters, cleaning the air, absorbing impurities and leaving indoor air freshener. In the summer, large plants can create shade and hence have a cooling effect,” says Sue Huckle from Posh Plants. “Easy to look after are Kentia palms, Dracaenas and Scheffleras. My advice is “go big”, fill your house with lots of healthy greenery and breathe in the clean air!”. Discover more tips for your home from design experts.

After a long process of redesign, broadcaster and life coach Melissa Porter’s home is coming together into an inspired yet functional space. “My kitchen isn’t a big space, but as I spend a lot of time here it needed to be precisely as I wanted it. I love kitchen gadgets!” she says. “My top tip is to have deep shelves in cupboards fitted with power points, so you can keep blenders and mixers, etc, tucked away but they’re ready to use when you need them. My two must-haves for this kitchen were the instant boiling water tap and two full size ovens – perfect for entertaining lots of people!”. Find out how to achieve this look in 8 steps.
