From Italian gelato shops to vintage ice cream parlours, we have gathered some great places for a sweet treat

Makcari’s

54 Central Parade, Herne Bay

Established in 1931 by the Macari family, Makcari’s is a coffee lounge and ice cream parlour with several locations in Herne Bay. There are lots of flavours to choose from which can be had on their own or in a sundae, banana split or knickerbocker glory.

Gelato at Makcari’s is made in traditional Italian style with inventive flavours including apple crumble, wild cherry, chocolate and orange, peanut butter and many more.

• Amarettos

8 High Street, Dymchurch

Small ice cream parlour on Dymchurch’s high street, Amarettos, serves thick and creamy ice cream in waffle cones that are perfect to be enjoyed while enjoying the open sands of the beach. Ice cream is supplied by Simply Ice Cream, made in the village of Bonnington.

Loyal customers rave online about how delicious and creamy the ice cream served at Amarettos is; stand-out flavours include coconut, bubblegum and honeycomb, but there are lots to try.

Melt Gelato

Sands Hotel, 16 Marine Drive, Margate

Sands in Margate, is a boutique hotel with arresting vistas over the beach. Using milk from cows raised locally in Kent, Melt makes and serves artisanal gelato, waffles, cakes and milkshakes. The parlour that makes up part of the hotel is a great place to make a detour for a sweet pick me up before heading back out to explore the trendy up-and-coming resort.

With special seasonal flavours created including a strawberries and cream flavour for Wimbledon, other inventive concoctions have included pistachio cherry cheesecake and mojito.

Sundae Sundae

62 Harbour Street, Whitstable

The adorable frontage of Sundae Sundae is as welcoming as its ice creams are tempting. Run by couple Chris and Gemma, this shop also sells souvenirs and beach necessities, traditional rock in a range of flavours and much more.

All the classic flavours are covered or you can opt for something different in the form of blackberry crumble, cherry or salted caramel.

Sorbetto

76 Harbour Parade, Ramsgate

Desserts are big and decadent at Sorbetto on Ramsgate’s Harbour Parade. Homemade gelato goes into huge sharing sundaes, banana splits, ice cream-topped waffles, freakshakes and more.

Flavours include Turkish delight which is ‘to die for’ according to one happy customer.

Morelli’s

14 Victoria Parade, Broadstairs

With its first parlour opening right here in Kent a stone’s throw from Viking Bay in Broadstairs, Morelli’s has since expanded to the four corners of the world with 18 stores as far away as America, Dubai and the Philippines!

Ice cream is made fresh in store, perfect to grab a couple of scoops in a cone and head out to the beach or indulge in something heftier like an Eton mess sundae or a selection of mini cones with nine different flavours.

There are options for vegans and gluten free cones so everyone can enjoy. Opt for a sundae that comes dripping with sauce and topped with whipped cream and a variety of toppings.
