The Great British Bake Off – Episode 4 poll
17:45 27 August 2015
Dessert was the name of the game in episode 4 of the BBC cookery show. With whisks and piping bags at the ready, the bakers set about to create crème brulee, spanische windtorte and a 3 tiered cheesecake
This week on the Bake Off was dessert week and packed with enough sugar to make your teeth hurt just from watching. First, the signature challenge was to create the French classic and all-round dinner party favourite, crème brulée. Aiming for the perfect wobble when set, the task saw Ian and Tamal triumph, while Sandy, Paul and Flora’s brulées were scrambled or unset.
The technical challenge, set by Mary, was to bake an Austrian meringue cake – the spanische windtorte – a task that put the contestants’ meringue making and piping skills to the test. Top of the tortes was Paul, closely followed by Ugne and Flora.
Finally, the showstopper challenge was to create a three-tiered baked cheesecake. Nadiya’s fizzy pop creation, complete with levitating can, was the stand-out bake, bringing a sense of fun to the challenge. Tamal’s hazelnut and mango cheesecakes, adorned with nutty sugarwork got Mary’s vote and Ian impressed the judges once again with his apple, rosemary and tarragon tower.
Results time and Ian won star baker for the third week running. Sandy, who may have been overtaking Mel and Sue in the comedy stakes, sadly couldn’t stand up to the baking challenges this week and became the fourth contestant to leave the tent.
